A reserve officer in the Israeli army’s Givati Brigade reportedly committed suicide on Thursday, succumbing to a psychological struggle stemming from his participation in the war in Gaza. The officer, identified as Thomas Edzguskes, was 28 years old.
According to reports, Edzguskes took his own life after battling severe mental distress linked to his involvement in the fighting near Gaza settlements during the initial stages of the conflict. His trauma was allegedly compounded by his later participation in ground operations inside the Gaza Strip.
Prior to his death, the officer reportedly posted online expressing his inability to continue living, describing a state of devastation and loss. Details surrounding the circumstances of his suicide remain limited.
This tragic incident highlights a concerning trend within the Israeli military. Recent data revealed a staggering 279 attempted suicides within the ranks over an 18-month period, with 36 soldiers dying by suicide during the same timeframe.
An internal investigation by the Israeli army attributed a significant portion of these suicides to the harsh conditions and traumatic experiences endured by soldiers during the fighting in the Gaza Strip.
The war in Gaza, which began in October 2023, has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis, with over 70,000 Palestinians killed and more than 171,000 injured, the majority of whom are women and children. Despite ceasefire agreements, violations continue to occur, leading to further casualties and suffering.
Restrictions on the entry of essential food and medical supplies into Gaza exacerbate the dire situation for the approximately 2.4 million Palestinians living in the territory. The psychological impact of the conflict on both sides continues to be a major concern. This suicide underscores the urgent need for mental health support for veterans and active duty personnel.
