Algeria Hosts Tripartite Mechanism Meeting on Libya

Algiers convened a ministerial meeting of the Tripartite Mechanism of Neighboring Countries concerning the Libyan crisis earlier today. The meeting saw the participation of Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad and African Affairs, alongside Badr Abdel-Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Egyptians Abroad of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Mohamed Ali Nafati, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad of the Republic of Tunisia.

The gathering facilitated in-depth consultations and a comprehensive exchange of views on the evolving situation in Libya. Discussions centered on contributing to efforts aimed at advancing the United Nations-sponsored political process in the sister nation. This initiative stems from the understanding that neighboring countries are most affected by the repercussions of the Libyan crisis, closest to its realities and details, and most eager to reach a sustainable settlement.

The Tripartite Mechanism’s work culminated in the adoption of a joint statement. This statement emphasized the importance of the principle of Libyan ownership and leadership of the political process in Libya. It called upon all Libyan parties to prioritize the supreme interests of their country, ensuring an end to division, the unification of political and military institutions, and the organization of parliamentary and presidential elections.

The statement reiterated the three countries’ rejection of all forms of external interference in Libyan internal affairs and called for the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya. Furthermore, the joint statement praised Algeria’s role in the UN Security Council, aimed at highlighting the international community’s responsibility in stopping the squandering of the Libyan people’s resources and ensuring the sound management of their frozen financial assets.

The meeting underscores Algeria’s continued commitment to fostering stability and peace in the region.
