Cairo – The Arab League has welcomed the United Nations General Assembly’s vote to extend the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for an additional three years.
Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the vote, emphasizing the vital role UNRWA plays in providing essential services to Palestinian refugees across the region. These services include education, healthcare, relief, and social services. The extension ensures the continuation of this critical support for millions of vulnerable individuals.
“This decision reflects the international community’s continued commitment to the Palestinian cause and its recognition of the indispensable humanitarian work carried out by UNRWA,” stated a spokesperson for the Arab League. “The agency’s work remains crucial in the absence of a just and lasting resolution to the Palestinian refugee issue.”
The Arab League has consistently advocated for the strengthening of UNRWA’s capabilities and resources to enable it to effectively fulfill its mandate. The organization views UNRWA as a temporary, yet essential, entity until a permanent solution is found in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and international law.
The extension of UNRWA’s mandate comes at a time when the agency faces significant financial challenges, which have threatened its ability to deliver essential services. The Arab League has urged member states and the international community to increase their contributions to UNRWA to ensure its long-term sustainability and ability to meet the growing needs of Palestinian refugees.
The organization reiterated its unwavering support for the rights of Palestinian refugees, including their right to return, and reaffirmed its commitment to working towards a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
