Polisario Front Rejects Moroccan Claims on UN Resolution

New York (UN Headquarters) – The Polisario Front has strongly refuted claims made by Moroccan officials regarding the recent United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797. Sidi Mohamed Amar, the Polisario Front’s representative to the UN and coordinator with MINURSO, dismissed the assertions as misleading and inaccurate.

Amar emphasized that the right to self-determination is a fundamental and inalienable right of the Sahrawi people. He stated that this right cannot be compromised or diminished under any circumstances. His comments come in direct response to statements made by the Moroccan Foreign Minister following the adoption of Resolution 2797, which extended the mandate of MINURSO, the UN peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara.

The Moroccan government has interpreted aspects of the resolution as bolstering its position on the Western Sahara issue. However, the Polisario Front maintains that the resolution reaffirms the UN’s commitment to finding a just and lasting solution to the conflict, based on the principle of self-determination for the Sahrawi people.

“The Security Council resolution does not endorse the Moroccan narrative,” Amar stated. “It calls for a resumption of negotiations between the parties with a view to achieving a mutually acceptable political solution, which provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.”

The Polisario Front reiterated its readiness to engage in serious and constructive negotiations with Morocco, under the auspices of the United Nations, to reach a peaceful and lasting resolution to the conflict. They insist that any solution must be in accordance with international law and respect the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people.

The ongoing dispute over Western Sahara remains a significant challenge to regional stability. The Polisario Front’s rejection of Morocco’s interpretation of the UN resolution underscores the deep divisions that persist between the two parties and highlights the urgent need for renewed diplomatic efforts to break the deadlock.
