ALGIERS – The United States’ new National Security Strategy highlights Algeria’s crucial position within the American approach to the African continent. Washington views Algeria as a stable partner capable of providing a strategic environment for cooperation in both energy and security.
The strategy document emphasizes a deeply rooted “sovereign partnership” with Algeria, moving beyond mere diplomatic formalities. This reflects a consistent American perspective on Algeria’s significance in its strategic calculations.
This assessment is based on several recent developments in bilateral relations, including President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s meeting with the US President’s senior advisor for Africa and the Middle East, as well as frequent visits from AFRICOM leadership. Ongoing negotiations with major American oil companies regarding investment projects within Algeria further underscore this point.
This dynamic suggests that the United States is moving towards establishing a long-term strategic partnership with Algeria, viewing it as a reliable actor in managing vital issues on the continent. The 33-page document, released December 4, 2025, reveals a significant shift in Washington’s approach to foreign policy. After years of direct interventions and attempts to impose external political models, the United States acknowledges the limits of its capacity to engage in prolonged conflicts and reshape political landscapes.
The document signals a more pragmatic approach focused on vital interests and selective partnerships. Page 29, dedicated to Africa, prioritizes energy, including liquefied natural gas, the development of civilian nuclear technology, and critical minerals essential for American industrial security. Algeria is prominently positioned within this context, given its energy resources and capabilities.
The US views Algeria as a vital component in its strategic vision for Africa’s future. The focus on energy and security cooperation signifies a deepened and more pragmatic relationship between the two nations.
