Kyiv – Recent developments indicate progress in Ukrainian-American negotiations, even as concerns rise in Europe regarding potential concessions to Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy affirmed Ukraine’s commitment to working with the United States towards a lasting peace, following a series of diplomatic engagements.
Zelenskyy described a phone call with US envoys as “substantial and constructive,” noting agreement on the next steps in joint discussions between Kyiv and Washington. He stated on social media that Ukraine intends to work sincerely with the US to achieve a genuine peace. He also awaits a detailed report from chief negotiator Rustem Umerov regarding the Miami talks.
The US State Department confirmed the discussions with the Ukrainian delegation were constructive, encompassing the outcomes of recent meetings between US representatives and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The State Department emphasized that genuine progress hinges on Russia’s commitment to de-escalation and a cessation of hostilities.
The Kremlin acknowledged “some progress” in the talks but noted “much work remains” to reach a final settlement. They await a formal response from the US regarding the discussions held last week.
European nations appear more cautious. French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to meet with Zelenskyy and the leaders of the UK and Germany to assess the ongoing negotiations facilitated by the US. Macron stressed what he sees as Russia’s escalatory approach, asserting that Moscow is not genuinely seeking peace. He called for strong security guarantees for Ukraine and condemned recent strikes targeting energy and railway infrastructure.
“Ukraine can count on our unwavering support,” Macron stated, underscoring the need for robust security assurances. The coming days will be crucial in determining the trajectory of the peace process, as pressure mounts from both military and diplomatic fronts.
