Algeria Secures Key Leadership Role in Global Copyright Arena

Geneva, December 8, 2025 – Algeria has been elected to a significant leadership position within the international copyright framework. Mr. Mehdi Delmi, Assistant Director General of the National Copyright and Neighboring Rights Office (ONDA), was elected Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This prestigious appointment, representing the African Group, is for a two-year term spanning 2026-2027.

The announcement, released by ONDA, follows the conclusion of the 47th session of the SCCR, held in Geneva from December 1st to 5th, 2025. The SCCR is a crucial intergovernmental body responsible for shaping and developing international regulations concerning copyright and related rights, particularly in the context of global digital and technological advancements.

This election signifies international recognition of Algeria’s leading role in championing copyright protection at both regional and international levels. It also acknowledges the technical and professional contributions of ONDA within the multilateral arena.

ONDA expressed its sincere gratitude to the African Group for their support of Algeria’s candidacy, and to the Permanent Mission of Algeria in Geneva for their continuous support and dedication to strengthening Algeria’s presence within WIPO.

The new leadership of the SCCR comprises: Mr. Peter Labadi (Hungary) as Chair, Mr. Mohamed Mehdi Delmi (Algeria) as Vice-Chair, and Mr. Martin Augusto Cortese (Argentina) as Vice-Chair.

In his new role, Mr. Delmi will be instrumental in supporting the work of the Committee, facilitating dialogue among member states, and building consensus to achieve effective and balanced progress on matters related to copyright and related rights.

ONDA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting cultural and creative industries in Algeria, protecting the rights of creators, and fostering African and international cooperation in the field of copyright.
