Algeria Ranks 7th Globally in Garlic Production

Algiers – Algeria has secured the 7th position worldwide in garlic production, according to recent data. The nation’s output reached an impressive 212,300 tons during the 2023/2024 season.

The figures highlight Algeria’s significant contribution to the global garlic market. While China dominates the list with a staggering 20.7 million tons, Algeria’s ranking demonstrates its growing agricultural capabilities.

India follows in second place with 3.27 million tons, and Bangladesh ranks third with 548,907 tons. Within the Arab world, Egypt leads the way, securing the fourth global rank with 490,417 tons, surpassing Algeria, which holds the second position in the Arab region.

Uzbekistan narrowly edged out Algeria, claiming the sixth spot globally with 225,951 tons. Myanmar, Spain, and Ukraine follow, ranking eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively. South Korea secured fifth place with 318,220 tons.

The domestic production of garlic is crucial for Algeria’s agricultural economy. Garlic is a staple in Algerian cuisine and is valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties. Algeria continues to prioritize the development of its agricultural sector to enhance the production of strategic crops, bolster national food security, and reduce reliance on imports.
