Algiers, Algeria – Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, the Archbishop of Algiers, has commended the Algerian authorities for their consistent attention to the issue of religious freedom. His remarks came during the opening of the 4th National Conference on Religious Freedom held in Algiers on Monday.
Cardinal Vesco described religious freedom as a “complex and vitally important issue that has yet to be resolved anywhere in the world.” He emphasized the necessity of mutual respect between religions for true religious freedom to exist.
“There is no religious freedom without mutual respect between religions,” the Cardinal stated, highlighting the intricate nature of the topic. He further stressed that religion is an integral part of humanity and that the foundation of religious freedom lies in understanding, fraternity, and friendship – values he deemed invaluable.
Cardinal Vesco affirmed Algeria’s commitment to the principle of religious freedom, stating, “We witness and experience this respect daily.” His comments underscore a positive assessment of the environment for religious practice within the country.
The conference, held at the El Aurassi Hotel in Algiers, was attended by ambassadors and representatives of accredited diplomatic bodies in Algeria. The event featured two academic sessions focusing on “Religious Freedom in the Constitutional Perspective and National Reference” and “Mechanisms for Embodying Religious Freedom in the Institutional and Societal Reality.” The discussions aimed to explore and strengthen the framework for religious freedom in Algeria.
