Analyst: French Campaign Against Algeria Stemming from Lost Colonial Illusion

DZWatch Exclusive: A prominent political analyst has stated that the escalating French media and political campaign against Algeria is a direct consequence of Algeria’s firm stance against external dictates and its rejection of any form of colonial influence. Dr. Mohamed Ben Kharrouf asserted that this unwavering policy, pursued by Algeria for several years, has triggered resentment in certain French circles.

Speaking on DZ International Radio, Dr. Ben Kharrouf emphasized that recent attacks from France are indicative of the far-right’s inability to accept Algeria’s sovereign decision-making. He highlighted the timing of this increased hostility, coinciding with the Christophe Glayse case. Glayse was convicted in Tizi Ouzou after it was proven that he entered Algeria not as a journalist, but as an undercover operative posing as a tourist, tasked with carrying out sabotage related to the terrorist organization MAK, which is classified as a terrorist movement in Algeria.

Dr. Ben Kharrouf explained that the root of the strained relations between France and Algeria lies in Algeria’s categorical rejection of French ‘guardianship.’ This rejection, he stated, has not been digested by certain well-known right-wing factions in France who still harbor the illusion of dominance and control over Algeria.

“These factions are attempting to impose a ‘French touch’ on Algerian policy, exploit national resources, and dictate domestic and foreign policy,” Dr. Ben Kharrouf said. “However, they have been confronted with Algeria’s sovereign decision-making, particularly since President Abdelmadjid Tebboune assumed office. His policy towards the former colonizer has been clear: a break with all colonial ideology and a rejection of all dictates and guardianship.”

He further stated, “Anyone wishing to establish relations with Algeria must understand these conditions, respect Algeria’s independence and sovereignty, and adhere to international agreements and charters, especially those bilaterally signed between Algeria and France.”

Dr. Ben Kharrouf expressed no surprise at the political and media hypocrisy and the double standards employed by some French circles. He pointed to instances such as demanding adherence to French laws while simultaneously disregarding international arrest warrants issued by Algeria, and the overt support provided to the terrorist organization MAK on French soil. These actions demonstrate a clear disconnect between rhetoric and reality, according to the analyst.
