Algeria and Hungary Consider Reopening Algiers-Budapest Air Route

Algiers, December 11, 2025 – The Algerian-Hungarian Joint Governmental Committee for Economic, Technical, and Scientific Cooperation convened its fourth session today in Algiers, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for collaboration.

The meeting was co-chaired by Algeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yacine Oualid, and Hungary’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Tamás Varga, with representatives from various sectors of both countries participating.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, both parties expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved in bilateral cooperation, emphasizing a shared desire to elevate relations to higher levels. This reflects the strong political will of both leaderships and the historical friendship between Algeria and Hungary.

The current session takes place amidst a notable increase in trade volume and the emergence of initiatives in diverse fields such as scientific research, industry, energy, and agriculture. Both sides acknowledged the advancements made within the framework of the research cooperation program, particularly in agriculture and forestry, as evidenced by agreements signed between Algerian and Hungarian research institutions.

Discussions during the session covered a range of topics of mutual interest. Notably, the possibility of reopening the direct air route between Algiers and Budapest was examined, driven by the growing trade and exchange between the two nations.

Other areas of focus included exchanging expertise in agriculture, forestry, and aquaculture, fostering cooperation in scientific and technical research and vocational training, and exploring collaboration in the energy sector. Algeria, as a key energy partner for Europe, aims to leverage Hungarian expertise in renewable energy technologies.

Furthermore, the committee explored ways to enhance tourism exchange and promote each country’s tourism potential, aiming to create new momentum in this sector. Emphasis was also placed on Algeria’s commitment to digital transformation and support for start-up companies, as well as highlighting investment opportunities within Algeria’s increasingly open investment climate, facilitated by the new investment law and its unprecedented incentives for foreign investors.

Both delegations called for increased bilateral trade and the creation of new dynamics in the exchange of expertise, aiming to further solidify the economic partnership between Algeria and Hungary.
