Indian Official Sparks Outrage After Removing Doctor’s Veil

Patna, India – A video circulating online has ignited a firestorm of criticism against the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, after he was filmed removing a Muslim doctor’s veil during a public event. The incident occurred during a ceremony where appointment letters were being handed out to newly qualified physicians.

The footage, widely shared across social media platforms, shows Kumar handing the doctor her appointment letter. He then appears to question her about her head covering before seemingly ordering her to remove it. Witnesses say Kumar then reached out and pulled the veil off himself.

Reports identify the doctor as Nusrat Parveen, who was wearing a niqab that covered her face. According to sources, the 75-year-old Chief Minister expressed his displeasure, reportedly asking, “What is this?” before an official quickly ushered the doctor away from the stage.

The incident has drawn condemnation from activists and social media users alike, many labeling the action as “reprehensible” and a form of “public harassment.” Critics argue that such behavior by a public figure, especially amidst laughter from the audience, is not a corrective measure but rather an egregious abuse of power and a public humiliation.

“This is how patriarchal authority and the arrogance of the majority hide behind a facade of concern, to eliminate a woman’s freedom,” one commenter stated.

Others emphasized that the doctor’s dignity and understanding of her equality were paramount, asserting that no one, including the Chief Minister, has the right to publicly demean an educated, adult woman for her choice of attire.

This incident has reignited discussions surrounding systemic discrimination against Muslims in India. Despite comprising a significant portion of the population, Muslims often face marginalization and discriminatory practices at various levels, even from officials who are supposed to represent justice and equality.
