El Oued, Algeria – December 17, 2025 – Authorities in El Oued have apprehended three individuals suspected of defrauding the national travel grant program. The arrests were made by operational units of the police force in the Taleb Larbi district, in coordination with the border police.
According to a statement released by the El Oued police department on Wednesday, the suspects are accused of illegally exiting and re-entering the country while circumventing regulations related to currency exchange and the movement of capital. They allegedly exploited the tourist travel grant, valued at €750, to facilitate their scheme.
The investigation revealed that the individuals departed Algeria using the travel grant but returned without fulfilling the mandatory minimum stay requirement stipulated by law. This suggests an intent to misuse the funds and exploit the system for personal gain.
DZWatch understands that the suspects have been presented before the Public Prosecutor at the Debila Court. Further details regarding the charges and potential penalties are expected to emerge as the legal proceedings unfold.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by Algerian authorities to combat fraud and corruption, particularly within programs designed to benefit citizens. The police have reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the integrity of national financial systems. The case serves as a warning to others who may be considering similar fraudulent activities.
