Modi Concludes Ethiopia Visit, Urges Unity Among Global South

Addis Ababa – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a two-day visit to Ethiopia on Wednesday, marking the first visit of its kind to the nation. During his stay, Modi championed the cause of the Global South, advocating for collective strength and unified action.

The visit included extensive discussions with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat. Several bilateral agreements were signed, signaling a new phase of collaboration between India and Ethiopia.

Addressing the Ethiopian Parliament, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the two countries, announcing the commencement of a new era of strategic partnership. He conveyed greetings from over a billion Indian citizens to the Ethiopian people, expressing his honor to be in Ethiopia, the land of lions.

Modi lauded Ethiopia’s progress across various sectors, noting that the legislative authority embodies democratic values that reflect the will of the people, forming the bedrock of national policies and programs. He emphasized that India and Ethiopia are natural partners, with Ethiopia strategically located at the crossroads of Africa and India at the heart of the Indian Ocean. This geographical alignment, he argued, makes cooperation essential for regional development and peace.

Prime Minister Modi asserted that India and Ethiopia share a common vision for a world characterized by equitable development, accessible technology, respect for sovereignty, shared prosperity, and the defense of peace. “Solidarity is strength, and cooperation is a source of influence. Today, as nations of the Global South, as ancient civilizations, and as friends, India and Ethiopia stand together,” he stated.

Modi also acknowledged Ethiopia’s role as a center for African diplomacy, citing its hosting of the African Union headquarters. He referenced India’s support for the African Union’s inclusion in the G20 in 2023, reflecting a shared vision for a more inclusive world.
