Gaza City – Recent heavy rainfall has severely impacted displacement centers across the Gaza Strip, with approximately 90 percent reportedly flooded. The dire situation is exacerbating an already critical humanitarian crisis for those displaced by recent conflict.
According to Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for Civil Defense in Gaza, the extensive flooding has created extremely challenging conditions for displaced families. Shelters and tent encampments, already struggling to accommodate the large number of people seeking refuge, are now inundated with water, increasing the risk of disease and further hardship.
“The rains have compounded the suffering of those who have already lost so much,” Bassal stated. “These families are facing unimaginable difficulties, and the flooding has only made their situation more precarious.”
The Civil Defense forces are working to provide assistance, but resources are stretched thin. The immediate needs include drainage of floodwaters, provision of dry shelter, blankets, and medical supplies. The situation underscores the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid to address the growing crisis in Gaza.
The flooding adds another layer of complexity to an already fragile environment, raising concerns about the long-term impact on the health and well-being of the affected population. The lack of adequate infrastructure and resources makes the situation particularly challenging to address. International organizations are being urged to provide immediate and sustained support to alleviate the suffering of the displaced population and prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
