DZWatch News Exclusive: Former Ecuadorian President Rodrigo Borja, a pivotal figure in Ecuadorian politics and a founder of the Democratic Left party, has died at the age of 90. His passing marks the end of an era defined by significant political and social reforms that continue to resonate within the nation.
Borja served as President of Ecuador from 1988 to 1992. His presidency was characterized by bold decisions aimed at promoting social justice and strengthening the rights of marginalized groups, particularly Indigenous communities.
A landmark achievement of his administration was the granting of land titles for approximately one million hectares of land to Indigenous groups. This historic move followed the first major Indigenous uprising in the country’s history. In 2019, Borja stated that this initiative represented the first time an Ecuadorian government had formally recognized Indigenous land ownership.
Beyond land reform, Borja’s government successfully disarmed and dismantled the “Alfaro Vive, Carajo” armed group, contributing to greater internal stability. He also prioritized social programs, launching literacy campaigns and initiatives to support education, including providing school breakfasts.
Current Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa expressed his condolences via social media, stating that “Rodrigo Borja will remain forever in the memory of Ecuador.” He emphasized that the country honors the legacy of a man who left a profound mark on its political and social history. DZWatch will continue to follow developments and provide in-depth analysis.
