Israeli Actions Impede Lebanese Army’s Disarmament Efforts: Expert

Beirut, Lebanon – Continued Israeli presence in southern Lebanon is significantly hindering the Lebanese Armed Forces’ (LAF) ability to fully implement disarmament efforts in the region, according to military expert Brigadier General Hassan Jouni.

Jouni asserts that while the LAF strives to confine weapons to state control, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, Israel maintains control over several strategic locations. These include the heights of Labouneh, Jebel Blat, Jall al-Deir, Al-Dawayir, and Tal al-Hamames, in addition to complete dominance over Lebanese airspace.

In his analysis, Jouni stated that this ongoing occupation prevents the LAF from completing its mission, which is scheduled to conclude by the end of the year. He added that the LAF also faces shortages in mine detection and removal equipment, financial resources, combat capabilities, surveillance technology, and tunnel detection systems.

Jouni also commented on the security wall erected by Israel in Yaroun and Maroun al-Ras, suggesting it is likely related to operational necessities rather than a long-term strategic objective. He believes the wall’s presence is not permanent.

For the past year, Israel has reportedly not fully adhered to the ceasefire agreement, citing security concerns as justification for its actions. While Hezbollah has largely complied with the agreement, Israel has allegedly committed numerous violations and targeted military leaders, as well as civilian sites accused of harboring weapons or being used by the group.

Negotiations Intensify

Amid growing concerns that the ceasefire agreement could collapse entirely due to Israel’s repeated threats of a large-scale ground operation to disarm Hezbollah, mediators are attempting to defuse the crisis through diplomatic channels. Recent reports indicate that negotiations are escalating, with higher-level Israeli participation expected in direct talks with Lebanon.
