The Algerian energy and mining sector remains steadfast in its commitment to minimizing its environmental impact while ensuring the nation’s long-term energy and water security. Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, emphasized this dedication during a recent national forum on quality of life.
Arkab stated that the sector is focused on optimizing the utilization of national hydrocarbon and mineral resources, safeguarding them for future generations. This includes meeting the needs of various economic sectors, contributing to the national economy, and bolstering overall national development.
Environmental responsibility is a cornerstone of the sector’s policy. Ongoing efforts are dedicated to environmental protection and reducing the carbon footprint through the implementation of various eco-friendly projects. A key objective is to reduce gas flaring to below 1%, achieved through enhanced monitoring and control of emissions.
A specialized committee, comprising key stakeholders, has been established to develop a roadmap for creating a national mechanism to detect, assess, and mitigate methane emissions. This initiative underscores Algeria’s proactive approach to addressing climate change.
Furthermore, the adoption of environmentally sound fuel practices has led to the elimination of lead emissions from vehicles through the exclusive marketing of unleaded gasoline. This has significantly improved fuel quality and reduced overall emissions.
The sector is also actively promoting a circular economy model by valorizing solid and organic waste and implementing the concept of ‘urban mining’ to recover and recycle metals from ferrous scrap and other materials. Efforts are underway to recycle used oils and produce biofuels, transforming environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable development and improved quality of life.
To modernize mining operations, the sector is integrating advanced technologies to minimize dust and particulate emissions resulting from extraction activities. The aim is to transform mines into environmentally friendly sites through investments in smart spraying systems and real-time air quality monitoring devices, ensuring the health and well-being of residents in mining areas and providing a healthy living environment.
