Trump Appoints Louisiana Governor Special Envoy to Greenland

Washington D.C. – Former President Donald Trump announced Sunday his intention to appoint Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland. The self-governing territory is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

In a statement, Trump asserted that Landry possesses a deep understanding of Greenland’s strategic importance to U.S. national security. He stated that Landry would work decisively to protect and advance U.S. interests, ensuring not only American security but also the stability and safety of its allies worldwide.

Landry assumed office as Governor of Louisiana in January 2024, with his term scheduled to continue until January 2028. This opens the possibility of him combining his domestic duties with his new role as special envoy to Greenland.

Past Interest in Greenland Acquisition

During his previous term, Trump repeatedly stressed the need for Greenland to come under U.S. sovereignty, even suggesting the possibility of using military force to control the strategically located island. While this issue had receded from the forefront of media attention, it resurfaced last August when the Danish government summoned the U.S. ambassador following reports of at least three individuals linked to Trump conducting covert influence operations within Greenland.

Vice President J.D. Vance also previously visited a remote U.S. military base on the island, criticizing Denmark for allegedly reducing investments there.

Trump has reaffirmed that Greenland is a cornerstone of U.S. national security, indicating that he is not ruling out any option, including military intervention, despite Denmark being a U.S. ally within NATO.

Landry’s appointment signals a renewed focus on Greenland within the former President’s foreign policy agenda.
