Algeria Warns of New Massacres in Sudan at UN Security Council

United Nations, New York – Algeria has issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating situation in Sudan, cautioning of potential new massacres and calling for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate immense human suffering. The Algerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, addressed the Security Council on behalf of the A+3 group, highlighting the critical state of affairs.

Ambassador Bendjama emphasized that the conflict in Sudan has reached a perilous stage after nearly a thousand days, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. He noted the unprecedented decline in humanitarian conditions and the widening scope of suffering throughout the country.

The Algerian representative urged the international community to prioritize addressing the humanitarian crisis, while also acknowledging the efforts undertaken by the Sudanese government to mitigate the suffering of its population, despite the significant logistical and on-the-ground challenges. He specifically drew attention to disturbing reports of severe violations occurring in the Kurdufan region, where several cities remain under siege and vital infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, have been targeted, further exacerbating the humanitarian emergency.

Ambassador Bendjama underscored the importance of enhanced coordination with international partners to ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected. He also called upon all Sudanese parties to engage constructively in dialogue, paving the way for a ceasefire and the launch of a comprehensive and sustainable peace process. “It is crucial to intensify diplomatic efforts to prevent the repetition of tragic scenarios, such as those witnessed in the El Fasher region,” he stated, warning against the risk of further escalation of violence.

Concluding his address, the Algerian representative reiterated Algeria’s opposition to any attempts to establish a parallel governing authority that could undermine the unity of the Sudanese state and deepen internal divisions. Algeria remains committed to supporting a peaceful and unified Sudan.
