Algiers – The European Union’s Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Mellado Pascua, has affirmed that discussions surrounding the revision of the partnership agreement between Algeria and the EU are part of a comprehensive process to recalibrate bilateral relations. He dismissed any characterization of the matter as a crisis or political dispute.
The Ambassador clarified that this process encompasses all levels, running parallel to preparations for upcoming visits from high-level officials from the European Commission and EU institutions. This move aims to elevate the matter from a technical handling to a level of political decision-making.
Speaking to El Moudjahid newspaper, the Ambassador emphasized that the EU considers Algeria an essential and indispensable partner, not only within the framework of the partnership agreement but also in the energy partnership and the new framework launched by the EU under the name “Pact for the Mediterranean.”
This pact, ratified during the Barcelona meeting on November 28th, provides a practical framework for cooperation that goes beyond the partnership agreement while preserving all legal and institutional gains. The Ambassador explained that the Pact for the Mediterranean aims to transition from general texts to concrete implementation measures. These include updating trade relations, revising customs procedures, facilitating the adoption of organic certifications for agricultural products, and creating new tools to promote and protect investments, including an agreement to facilitate sustainable investments.
He affirmed that Algeria was among the first countries to respond to the project and submit detailed proposals, reflecting its desire to develop the partnership on a more balanced and effective basis. Regarding the trade imbalance, the Ambassador stated that the evaluation of the relationship between Algeria and the EU should not be limited to trade figures but should also include the energy partnership, the balance of payments, and trade measures.
He pointed to significant potential for developing Algerian agricultural exports and strengthening technological partnerships, emphasizing the opportunities for growth and collaboration in these areas.
