Aleppo, Syria – A fragile calm has returned to the city of Aleppo following intense clashes between Syrian government forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The fighting, which erupted earlier today, affected several neighborhoods and resulted in casualties.
According to local sources, the Syrian Army High Command has issued orders to cease targeting SDF positions. A statement emphasized that the army’s actions were solely in response to incoming fire and were intended to protect civilians. The army maintains it has not attempted to alter existing control lines.
The SDF has reportedly issued similar directives to its fighters, instructing them to halt retaliatory actions against government forces in response to de-escalation efforts.
In the wake of the violence, the Governor of Aleppo, Azzam al-Gharib, announced the temporary closure of all public and private schools, universities, and government offices in the province for tomorrow, Tuesday.
Reports indicate that the neighborhoods of Al-Jamiliyah and Al-Suryan were particularly affected by the fighting. Casualties were reported among civilians due to shelling.
Eyewitness accounts describe heavy exchanges of fire involving heavy machine guns, RPGs, and mortar rounds, especially in the vicinity of the Ashrafieh district and the area between Shihane Square and Lairamoun Square. Both sides have accused the other of initiating the hostilities.
The clashes have resulted in the closure of roads leading to the Sheikh Maqsood and Ashrafieh districts, triggering displacement among civilians seeking safety. The situation remains tense, and further developments are being closely monitored.
DZWatch continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of violence and will provide updates as they become available.
