Lebanese Official Urges Prevention of Israeli Pretexts for Aggression

A high-ranking Lebanese official has called for preemptive measures to eliminate any excuses Israel might use to justify aggression against Lebanon. Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Mitri cautioned that there are no guarantees against a potential escalation by the Israeli military.

In a radio interview, Mitri stated, “There are no assurances or reassurances for Lebanon that Israel will not initiate a new escalation in the coming period.” However, he also cautioned against exaggerating the threat of Israeli escalation, stating that such fears are “unjustified and not based on credible information.” He urged against being swayed by assessments lacking reliable data.

“It is our duty to cut off any pretext for the enemy to attack Lebanon,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized. He noted that the mechanism committee established under the ceasefire agreement, in effect since late 2024, is working to verify the Lebanese army’s adherence to its responsibilities as outlined in the implementation plan.

Mitri highlighted a shift in international engagement with Lebanon, particularly in supporting the Lebanese army. He described Washington’s agreement to hold a special conference to support the army as “an indicator of this shift.” Preparations are underway for an upcoming visit by Army Commander Rudolph Heikel to the United States, though a specific date was not provided.

Mitri explained that the United States no longer endorses Israeli accusations of negligence or collusion by the Lebanese army. Instead, the US now acknowledges the army’s efforts, despite its limited capabilities. There is growing international understanding of the field conditions that may delay the implementation of certain aspects of the military plan.

Mitri added that there is international recognition of the Lebanese army’s logistical and financial needs, leading to renewed discussions about holding an international conference to support it, under a French-Saudi initiative. Recent reports in Israeli media have suggested that the Israeli military is finalizing a plan for a large-scale offensive against Hezbollah positions, should the Lebanese government and army fail to disarm the group by the end of 2025. These reports coincide with international and regional efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
