The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced Wednesday that they have seized control of two areas in North Darfur state, western Sudan. This development occurs amidst ongoing and intense clashes in the Darfur and Kordofan regions.
In a statement, the RSF claimed to have taken control of the “Abu Qumra” and “Ambro” areas within North Darfur. Local sources report that RSF forces, deploying dozens of combat vehicles, stormed the “Abu Qumra” area, located approximately 200 kilometers northwest of El Fasher. This area was previously under the control of the Sudanese army and the joint forces of armed movements, before the RSF advanced towards and seized “Ambro”.
Meanwhile, a source within the Sudanese army stated that a drone belonging to the RSF targeted military sites in Al-Ubayyid, the capital of North Kordofan state, earlier today. The source did not disclose any casualties resulting from the attack. DZWatch is attempting to independently verify this claim.
These movements are part of the RSF’s broader efforts to extend its control over the entirety of North Darfur state. This follows their capture of El Fasher on October 26th. That offensive was accompanied by accusations of massacres against civilians. RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) acknowledged the occurrence of “excesses” during the operation and announced the formation of investigative committees.
While the army and joint forces control parts of North Darfur, specifically the “Karnoi” and “Tina” areas, the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdul Wahid Nour, maintains control over the “Tawila” area.
In addition to Darfur, the Kordofan region, with its three states, is experiencing similar clashes that have led to widespread displacement in recent weeks. Hundreds of displaced people from Kadugli in South Kordofan have arrived in Al-Rahad in North Kordofan. Others displaced from Al-Dilling have reached the Al-Qouz and Al-Hamadi areas in South Kordofan. There are growing concerns that the RSF may prevent them from continuing their journey towards North Kordofan. DZWatch continues to monitor the humanitarian situation closely.
