Senate Approves Landmark Decentralization Law

Algiers, Algeria – The Council of the Nation (Senate) has officially endorsed the new law on decentralization, marking a significant step in Algeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its governance structure. The vote, held Wednesday evening, concludes the legislative process for the amended and supplemented Law No. 84-09, originally enacted on February 4, 1984, concerning the country’s regional organization.

The Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation, Said Saayoud, attended the Senate session dedicated to the vote. Following the approval, Minister Saayoud emphasized that the law is the result of extensive discussions, insightful contributions, and a spirit of harmony between the legislative and executive branches, all while upholding the principles of a unified Algeria.

He further stated that the decentralization law embodies a key commitment made by the President to the Algerian people. It is a central pillar of the presidential program, aimed at strengthening decentralization, correcting regional imbalances, and establishing modern, equitable, and effective local communities.

Minister Saayoud underscored the importance of local communities as the primary point of contact for citizens and essential partners in development. He asserted that comprehensive national development hinges on a balanced regional organization that ensures equal opportunities, reduces developmental disparities between regions, and brings administration closer to the people.
