Gazan Siblings Power Sewing Machine with Bicycle Ingenuity

In the heart of the war-stricken Gaza Strip, resourcefulness is born from necessity. Amidst the ongoing challenges, two siblings in the Nuseirat refugee camp have found an innovative solution to overcome power outages and keep their family’s livelihood alive.

Abdul Raouf and Reem Aziza, brother and sister, have transformed an old bicycle into a makeshift engine to power their sewing machine. With electricity supplies severely disrupted, the family faced the grim prospect of their sewing machine, once powered electrically by their father, becoming obsolete.

“It’s tiring and exhausting work, but we have to work in order to live,” Reem told DZWatch.

The daily scene sees 19-year-old Abdul Raouf skillfully sewing garments, while 15-year-old Reem diligently pedals the bicycle, providing the energy needed to operate the machine. This simple yet powerful act encapsulates the family’s resilience in the face of poverty and blockade.

Forced to abandon his studies due to the conflict, Abdul Raouf now works alongside Reem, a high school student. From sunrise to sunset, they dedicate their efforts to earning a living for their family. “We work from eight in the morning until sunset to provide food and drink,” Abdul Raouf explained, emphasizing the dire circumstances that led them to this solution.

The war has not only impacted their economic situation but has also left deep psychological scars. The family has endured the loss of relatives and neighbors, adding to the already heavy burden they carry.

Despite the hardships, Reem holds onto a simple hope: for the war to end and for Gaza to return to its former state, allowing her to resume her education. Their story is a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Gazan people, who continue to find innovative ways to survive and thrive in the face of adversity. The bicycle-powered sewing machine stands as a symbol of their determination and ingenuity.
