Sudan PM: Ceasefire Hinges on RSF Disarmament

Port Sudan, Sudan – Sudanese Prime Minister Kamel Idriss stated Friday that any ceasefire aimed at ending the ongoing conflict must be contingent upon the disarmament of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the consolidation of its members into designated camps.

Speaking at a press conference in Port Sudan following his return from New York, Prime Minister Idriss emphasized Sudan’s sovereignty, asserting that any international oversight must be mutually agreed upon. “We will not accept any UN forces in Sudan,” he declared, adding, “We have been burned by the embers of these international forces.”

Idriss reiterated that the peace initiative he presented before the UN Security Council affirms Sudan’s commitment to peace, not war. He highlighted that a key message of his visit was to underscore the Sudanese people’s desire for peace. “This initiative has moved us from the position of recipient to the position of initiator,” he stated.

He further explained that presenting the initiative at the Security Council represents Sudan’s entry into the “international family’s arena” and the ownership of a purely national initiative, considering it an “acknowledgment of the legitimacy of the civilian government.”

Prime Minister Idriss indicated that the Sudanese government will engage with neighboring countries to explain the peace initiative, emphasizing that its success in Sudan is crucial for the entire region. He stressed the need to create a conducive environment for an inclusive Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, facilitated by the Sudanese government.

The initiative, presented to the Security Council earlier this week, proposes a comprehensive ceasefire under regional and international auspices, the withdrawal of RSF forces from their controlled areas, the assembly of its fighters, and the launch of a Sudanese dialogue focused on reconciliation and the reintegration of fighters into society.

The RSF has reportedly rejected the ceasefire initiative presented by Khartoum to the UN Security Council.
