Algerian Security Forces Foil Massive Ecstasy Smuggling Operation

Algiers – A major operation by Algerian security forces has resulted in the seizure of 700,000 ecstasy pills and the dismantling of an international drug trafficking network. The coordinated effort between border police and customs officials at the Port of Bejaia represents a significant blow to organized crime and a major victory in the fight against narcotics.

According to official reports, the 700,000 ecstasy pills, weighing approximately 320 kg, arrived via a maritime route originating from a French port. The drugs were detected using advanced scanning technology at the Port of Bejaia. Authorities discovered the illicit cargo concealed within three tourist vehicles arriving from France. The pills were meticulously hidden in secret compartments constructed within the vehicles’ structures.

The drivers of the three vehicles, two women and one man, were immediately apprehended. Subsequent investigations led to coordinated field operations in the provinces of Bejaia, Algiers, and Setif. These operations resulted in the complete dismantling of the criminal network’s organizational structure and the arrest of 17 individuals, including one woman.

The operation also yielded a significant cache of seized assets, including 18 vehicles of various types, approximately 202 million Algerian dinars, 2980 euros, sensitive electronic equipment, three firearms, and counterfeit stamps and seals.

DZWatch has learned that the investigation has identified additional members of this international criminal network, both within Algeria and abroad. Security forces are continuing their pursuit of these individuals.

The suspects have been presented to the Public Prosecutor at the Specialized Penal Pole of the Sidi M’hamed Court for further judicial investigation and the application of appropriate legal measures.
