Somali PM Accuses Israel of Seeking Foothold in Horn of Africa

Mogadishu – The Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, has strongly condemned recent actions suggesting Israeli interest in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland. He described any recognition of Somaliland by Israel as a blatant assault on Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing that such a move is legally and morally invalid.

In an exclusive interview, Prime Minister Barre asserted that any such recognition would have no legal standing, reiterating Somalia’s status as an independent and sovereign nation with internationally recognized borders. He emphasized the Somali government and its people’s complete rejection of what he termed Prime Minister Netanyahu’s “reckless” stance. He suggested that Israel should focus on recognizing a Palestinian state instead of interfering in Somalia’s affairs.

Geopolitical Ambitions in the Red Sea

Prime Minister Barre cautioned against the geopolitical implications of Israel’s actions, suggesting that Israel is seeking a foothold in the Horn of Africa to control the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. He elaborated on these concerns, highlighting potential attempts to establish military bases, which he warned would set a dangerous precedent, threatening the security of Somali citizens and regional stability.

Diplomatic Efforts Underway

Regarding practical measures to counter this development, Prime Minister Barre revealed that Mogadishu has initiated extensive diplomatic efforts, engaging with friendly nations and international organizations. He indicated a broad international and regional consensus supporting Somalia’s position and rejecting Israeli violations of international law.

The Prime Minister affirmed Somalia’s right to utilize all available legal mechanisms to defend its territorial integrity, vowing to continue diplomatic and legal efforts to “repel this aggression in every possible way.”

US Stance Welcomed

Concerning the United States’ position, Prime Minister Barre commended Washington’s declared lack of intention to recognize Somaliland. He noted ongoing communication with the US administration, which continues to affirm its respect for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Concluding his remarks, Prime Minister Barre rejected any nation’s support for what he called Israel’s illegitimate recognition, stating, “I don’t believe any self-respecting country would follow the Israeli entity’s lead in this unacceptable position.”
