The Arab League has vehemently rejected Israel’s recognition of Somaliland’s secession, calling on the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action against the move. This strong condemnation came during an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council held on Sunday in response to Israel’s recognition of the self-declared independent region.
A statement released following the emergency meeting asserted, “We reject any actions resulting from the invalid Israeli recognition of the so-called ‘Somaliland’ aimed at facilitating plans for the forced displacement of the Palestinian people.” The Arab League views Israel’s action as a threat to regional stability and a violation of international law.
The statement further alleged that the Israeli recognition intends to exploit ports in northern Somalia to establish military bases. This claim underscores the deep concern within the Arab League regarding Israel’s strategic ambitions in the Horn of Africa.
The Arab League reaffirmed its unwavering stance on considering Somaliland an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, rejecting any attempts to recognize its separation. They emphasized their support for Somalia’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, and its right to defend its land.
The emergency meeting, convened at the request of Somalia and with the support of several member states, was held in Cairo at the level of permanent representatives to the Arab League. The Council has tasked the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, with addressing the President of the UN Security Council, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The aim is to urge them to adopt a firm position against Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, deeming it a threat to international peace and security.
The Arab League views Israel’s decision as an assault on Arab national security, warranting legal and diplomatic measures. The move is seen as further destabilizing the region and undermining efforts to achieve a lasting peace in the Middle East.
