Mahrez Leads Algeria to Round of 16, Signals Continental Ambition

Rabat – Algeria’s national team, ‘Les Fennecs,’ secured their place in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Burkina Faso today in Rabat. The win, achieved in the second match of Group E, propels Algeria to the knockout stages and reinforces their status as a serious contender for the continental title.

The decisive goal came courtesy of captain Riyad Mahrez, who calmly converted a penalty in the 23rd minute of the first half. The penalty was awarded after a Burkinabe defender was judged to have handled the ball inside the area.

Mahrez’s goal marks his third of the tournament and his ninth overall in Africa Cup of Nations appearances. His consistent performances on the continental stage are solidifying his reputation as a player for the big occasion, inching closer to breaking long-standing records.

With this victory, Algeria now sits atop Group E with a perfect six points. Burkina Faso and Sudan are tied for second place with three points each, while Equatorial Guinea trails the group without any points.
