African Union Warns Against Interference in Somali Territory

The African Union (AU) has issued a strong condemnation of actions perceived as undermining the territorial integrity of Somalia. The AU expressed its deep concern regarding the recognition of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland, an autonomous region within Somalia, by external actors.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, voiced the organization’s firm opposition to any initiative or action aimed at recognizing Somaliland as an independent entity. He reiterated the AU’s stance that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

In a statement released earlier today, the AU Commission Chairperson warned that any attempt to compromise Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity would contradict the fundamental principles of the African Union. He further cautioned that such actions could set a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the African continent.

“The African Union is committed to upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all its member states,” the statement emphasized. “Any deviation from this principle poses a grave threat to the stability of the region and the continent as a whole.”

The AU’s statement underscores the organization’s commitment to maintaining the existing borders and preventing the fragmentation of member states. The warning comes amid growing concerns about external interference in the internal affairs of African nations.

The situation in Somalia remains a sensitive issue, and the African Union’s intervention highlights the importance of respecting international law and upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. The AU will continue to monitor the situation closely and work towards a peaceful and sustainable resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of all Somalis.
