Algeria Emerges as Key Player in 2025 Oil Deals

Algiers – Algeria has solidified its position as a major player in the global oil market, participating in some of the largest petroleum deals of 2025. A surge in international demand and increased long-term investments in the energy sector have propelled Algeria to the forefront of oil production and development in the Middle East and North Africa.

The year 2025 witnessed significant transformations in oil and gas markets, marked by an unprecedented wave of major deals reshaping production and development across the region. Algeria has capitalized on this global momentum, leveraging rising international demand and accelerated investment in its energy sector.

According to industry analysis, growing global demand has prompted producing nations, including Algeria, to accelerate exploration and development programs. This includes a notable expansion in long-term agreements and drilling projects in areas with proven reserves.

Algeria at the Center of Global Competition

Data from 2025 indicates that Algeria has become a pivotal destination for competition among major international companies, rivaling traditional regions like the Gulf and Iraq. This shift reflects revisions in production and exploration policies aimed at attracting international partners, transferring technology, and enhancing extraction capabilities.

This activity has resulted in broad agreements between national and international companies, balancing economic feasibility with the state’s strategic objectives, primarily strengthening energy security and consolidating national sovereignty over resources.

2025 Deals: Algeria Among the Major Players

Within the context of the largest oil deals of 2025, Algeria was among a select group of countries with a strong presence. Alongside Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, and Egypt, Algeria concluded three pivotal deals in exploration and development, reinforcing its regional and international standing.

QatarEnergy Enters Exploration

In June 2025, Algeria marked a significant milestone with the entry of QatarEnergy into its domestic exploration sector, following the acquisition of a new exploration license during the 2024 licensing round. This marks QatarEnergy’s first foray into exploration within Algeria.

The deal encompasses the Ahara region in eastern Algeria, through a consortium comprising QatarEnergy with a 24.5% stake, TotalEnergies with the same share, and Sonatrach as the primary operator. This project reflects a deep commitment to Algeria’s energy sector.
