Algeria’s Oil Reserves Steady in 2025, Exploration Key

Algiers – Algeria maintains its position among Arab nations with significant oil reserves in 2025. This comes amid increased exploration activities and a rise in confirmed reserves across the Arab region. The global context is marked by heightened geopolitical volatility, reaffirming oil’s role as a stabilizing force and a strategic asset.

Algeria’s proven oil reserves remained stable at 12.2 billion barrels by the end of 2025, securing its seventh position among Arab countries. This figure reflects consistency compared to previous years, as the nation awaits the results of new exploration programs underway, particularly in the south and previously under-utilized areas.

This stability doesn’t indicate a decline in potential but rather the nature of confirmed reserves, which are updated only after thorough research and technical evaluation. Algeria is actively accelerating these processes as part of its evolving energy strategy.

In the Arab ranking, Algeria follows Qatar (25.24 billion barrels) and precedes Oman (4.8 billion barrels). Saudi Arabia leads with 267.2 billion barrels, followed by Iraq, the UAE, Kuwait, and Libya, which tops African Arab nations with 48.4 billion barrels.

Despite the numerical difference compared to Gulf states, Algeria, alongside Libya, remains a prominent oil producer outside that geographical area, granting it significant influence in North Africa and within the regional energy security equation. The Algerian government is banking on new exploration to boost production and ultimately bolster its energy position on the global stage. Increased investment and technological advancements are expected to play a crucial role in unlocking new reserves.

The focus remains on maximizing the country’s hydrocarbon potential through strategic partnerships and innovative exploration techniques. Algeria is committed to ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply while actively pursuing sustainable energy alternatives for the future.
