Algeria Boosts Tire Production, Aims for 19 Million Units Annually

Touggourt, Algeria – Algeria is significantly expanding its domestic tire production capacity, with a new investment project launched in Touggourt. The cornerstone was laid Monday for a tire manufacturing plant dedicated to producing tires for both light and heavy vehicles. This strategic project aims to reach a total production capacity of 5 million units per year.

The Director-General of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency, Omar Rekkache, along with the Wali of Touggourt, Othmane Abdelaziz, and other regional authorities, oversaw the launch. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the national economy and reducing reliance on imports.

This project, with an investment exceeding DZD 27 billion, will initially focus on producing 2 million heavy vehicle tires annually, followed by an additional 3 million light vehicle tires. The factory is being built on a 20-hectare plot of land in Tamacine.

This plant, coupled with similar projects in Oran, Setif, and Oum El Bouaghi, is projected to bring Algeria’s total tire production capacity to approximately 19 million units per year, fulfilling a significant portion of domestic demand. The increase in domestic production is expected to reduce the national import bill substantially.

Beyond its economic benefits, the project is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities in the Touggourt region and neighboring areas. The plant is projected to create 1,720 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs, stimulating economic activity and improving the livelihoods of local communities.
