DZWatch Exclusive: The United States and Israel have reportedly set a two-month deadline for the disarmament of Hamas, the Palestinian resistance movement. Sources indicate that this timeline was agreed upon during a recent meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump in Florida.
According to these sources, joint teams will be established to define clear parameters for what constitutes effective disarmament of Hamas. This includes, crucially, the destruction of the extensive tunnel network beneath Gaza.
The understanding is that if Hamas fails to disarm within the stipulated timeframe, Israel reserves the right to take further action. The exact nature of this action remains unspecified.
Simultaneously, there are reports suggesting that Washington is planning to initiate reconstruction efforts in Gaza within weeks. However, officials acknowledge that the disarmament process is likely to be significantly more protracted.
Furthermore, it is alleged that reconstruction in Rafah, currently under military control, will commence prior to the full disarmament of Hamas. This move suggests a phased approach to the broader Gaza agreement.
Netanyahu has reportedly agreed to proceed with the second phase of the Gaza agreement, despite existing disagreements with the Trump administration regarding its implementation. President Trump has expressed his desire for a swift transition to this next phase, stating that Hamas will be given a limited opportunity to relinquish its weapons. Failure to do so, he warned, would result in significant consequences.
President Trump is expected to unveil his broader plan for the Gaza Strip on January 15, 2026. This plan reportedly includes the establishment of an international oversight body, potentially led by President Trump himself. A new civilian governing entity for Gaza is also anticipated to be formed in the coming weeks, with the aim of assuming control from Hamas.
The first phase of the ceasefire agreement came into effect on October 10th. However, reports indicate that Israel has violated certain provisions of the agreement and delayed its full implementation. DZWatch will continue to provide updates on this developing situation.
