Algeria Concludes UN Security Council Term, Bahrain Takes Seat

Algiers – Algeria concludes its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council today, Wednesday. Bahrain will assume the seat starting tomorrow, Thursday.

Ambassador Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, affirmed during a Security Council session on international peace and security this past Monday that Algeria has completed its mandate and “fulfilled its duty.” He emphasized the international community’s obligation to address hotspots and prevent the spread of conflicts through just and sustainable political solutions that respect the sovereignty of states and the rights of their people.

Ambassador Bendjama urged Council members to “work diligently together and strive to constantly involve all members of the United Nations in the Council’s work.” Along with Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone, South Korea, and Slovenia are also departing the Council today.

The Security Council comprises five permanent members: the United Kingdom, China, the United States, France, and Russia. In addition, there are ten non-permanent members elected by the United Nations General Assembly.

The current non-permanent members include Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Latvia, Colombia, Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia. Arab nations rotate in the non-permanent seat between the African and Asian groups.
