Algiers – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken disciplinary action against Bertrand Traoré, the captain of the Burkina Faso national team, following comments he made after their match against Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The disciplinary action stems from Traoré’s criticism of the refereeing following the match, which Algeria won 1-0 thanks to a penalty. His remarks, made in the immediate aftermath of the Group E clash, were deemed to be in violation of CAF regulations.
The Burkina Faso Football Federation released a statement confirming that Traoré was summoned by CAF’s disciplinary committee to explain his comments. During the hearing, the player reportedly apologized and expressed regret for his words.
Consequently, CAF has imposed a fine of $10,000 on Traoré. The committee considered that certain phrases used by the Burkina Faso captain were inappropriate and brought the game into disrepute.
Despite the fine, the Burkina Faso federation sought to reassure fans that the incident does not tarnish Traoré’s image or question his commitment and professionalism. They emphasized his determination to continue giving his best on the field to help his country achieve better results in the remainder of the tournament.
The sanction highlights CAF’s commitment to upholding standards of conduct and protecting the integrity of the competition. It also serves as a reminder to players and officials to express their opinions responsibly and avoid making statements that could be interpreted as undermining the authority of the referees or the organization.
