Ex-Diplomat Warns of Attempts to Target Algeria Via Tunisia

Algiers – A former Tunisian diplomat has issued a stark warning regarding alleged attempts to destabilize Algeria by exploiting the close relationship between Algeria and Tunisia.

Abdullah al-Obeidi, a former Tunisian diplomat, cautioned against movements orchestrated by actors seeking to sow discord and suspicion between the two North African nations. Al-Obeidi suggested that Tunisia is not the primary target, but rather a conduit to undermine Algeria, allegedly fueled by well-known entities operating covertly.

During a radio interview, al-Obeidi stated that these actions are part of a broader political conflict, supported by actors based in capitals of countries hostile to the Arab region. These actors, he claims, are attempting to create pockets of tension and instability within the Maghreb region.

He emphasized that the Algerian leadership would not allow its relationship with Tunisia to be jeopardized, considering Tunisia as the only country with which Algeria shares secure and stable borders. Conversely, he asserted that entities hostile to Algeria are operating on multiple fronts, including attempting to damage its regional relationships, and even trying to fuel tensions between Algeria and Morocco to destabilize the entire region.

This warning comes amidst official Algerian denials of claims regarding the entry of the Algerian army into Tunisian territory. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in a recent address to the nation, emphasized that Algeria has never interfered in Tunisia’s internal affairs. He affirmed that the Algerian army has not set foot on Tunisian soil.

President Tebboune also cautioned against attempts to sow discord between the two countries, noting the strong national spirit in Tunisia and warning against misrepresenting it as vulnerable to infiltration. He reiterated that the security of Tunisia and Algeria is intertwined, and that any harm to Tunisia is a direct threat to Algeria.
