Security Officer Killed in Aleppo Explosion

Aleppo, Syria – A security officer was killed and others wounded in an explosion in the Bab al-Faraj district of central Aleppo, according to security sources. The incident occurred amidst heightened security measures implemented across Syria in anticipation of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Reports indicate that the explosion was triggered by an individual who detonated an explosive belt while being searched at a security checkpoint. The Ministry of Interior has confirmed the death of one officer and injuries to two others as a result of the blast.

“The remnants of the old regime are systematically carrying out attacks during national holidays and religious festivals to destabilize security,” stated a spokesperson for the Syrian Ministry of Interior. The spokesperson further claimed that the ministry possesses “accurate information” regarding the location and activities of former regime leaders, alleging their involvement in separatist agendas and collaboration with anti-Syrian elements.

State media has released images showing the deployment of internal security forces in several Syrian cities as part of an operation to secure New Year’s Eve festivities. This deployment follows recent incidents, including sniper fire targeting a Ministry of Interior checkpoint in Aleppo, attributed to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) operating in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh districts.

Another security checkpoint in the Shihan roundabout north of Aleppo was also reportedly attacked, resulting in injuries to a security officer. A security official condemned these actions, holding the SDF responsible for any escalation and vowing to take necessary measures in response to continued violations.

These events unfold against a backdrop of heightened tensions in Aleppo, following days of violence that resulted in the deaths of civilians and injuries to others, including women and children, due to indiscriminate shelling and sniper activity. The security situation remains volatile as authorities continue to investigate the recent explosion and maintain heightened vigilance during the holiday period.
