Global Crises Overwhelm World, Fuel Existential Anxiety

The past year has witnessed a confluence of overlapping crises that have shaken the foundations of global stability, leaving populations feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. Economic and social challenges, coupled with accelerating climate change, rapid technological advancements, and declining trust in democratic institutions, have created a sense that the world is under unprecedented pressure.

While many of these crises predate the current year, a global wave of elections has exposed the fragility of democracy when its ethical foundations are eroded. The erosion of democracy often begins with rhetoric, where political opponents are transformed into enemies. Despite these challenges, a surge of optimism accompanied the democratic processes as over 1.6 billion people headed to the polls, marking a period of intense democratic activity filled with promises and passionate speeches.

Over time, however, emotional and intellectual fatigue has grown, and what was once known as the liberal international order is fracturing under the strain of housing crises, widening social gaps, and rising militarism and nationalism. This reinforces the sense that the global order established after World War II is nearing its end.

Amidst this backdrop, a global existential anxiety has emerged, affecting all age groups, fueled by images of war, famine, and human suffering in places such as Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine. These conflicts highlight the urgent need for solutions to address humanitarian crises and promote peaceful resolutions.

The importance of responsible journalism in giving voice to human stories and confronting these challenges cannot be overstated.
