Iran Warns of Decisive Response to Protests, Foreign Interference

Tensions are high in western Iran, particularly in the Lorestan province, as authorities grapple with ongoing protests. While new demonstrations have been limited to funeral processions for those killed in recent clashes, the underlying unrest remains a significant challenge.

The protests initially erupted on December 28th, sparked by Tehran’s Grand Bazaar merchants protesting the sharp decline of the Iranian Rial and worsening economic conditions. These demonstrations quickly spread to numerous cities across the country.

On Wednesday, a member of the Basij militia, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, was killed, and thirteen police officers were injured during protests in the Kuhdasht region of Lorestan province, highlighting the volatile nature of the situation. Field reports indicate that the protests have been concentrated in western provinces such as Lorestan and Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari, as well as smaller cities stretching from south of Isfahan to Shiraz.

Iranian authorities are reportedly adopting a two-pronged approach to manage the unrest. This involves security measures aimed at preventing escalation, coupled with political and economic initiatives announced periodically by the government.

However, security and judicial officials have emphasized a firm stance against any deviation from peaceful protest, warning of strict legal action against what they deem acts of rioting, vandalism, or targeting of sensitive facilities. This position has been reinforced by both the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the police leadership.

Politically, Tehran maintains that the protests are domestic in nature and driven by internal demands, dismissing claims of foreign interference. However, recent statements from the United States have reignited the issue of external involvement, potentially leading Iranian authorities to reframe the protests as a security concern. This could significantly alter the response on the ground.

Tehran has warned that any foreign interference in Iranian internal affairs will be met with an appropriate response, as political tensions with Washington escalate and close monitoring of the internal situation continues.
