Israeli Forces Conduct Incursions in Southern Syria’s Yarmouk Basin

DZWatch News – Israeli forces have conducted multiple incursions into the Yarmouk Basin area in southern Syria, near the Golan Heights, since late last year. These actions have raised concerns about regional stability and adherence to existing disengagement agreements.

According to reports, an Israeli military unit entered a disused military site near the town of Jumla in the western Daraa governorate on Friday evening. The unit, consisting of approximately four military vehicles and twenty personnel, reportedly positioned itself around the site before withdrawing shortly thereafter.

Earlier in the week, another Israeli force, utilizing two pickup trucks, entered Syrian territory near the village of Um al-Azam, proceeding towards the village of Ruwayhinah in the northern Quneitra countryside. This force also withdrew after a brief period.

Syrian sources have accused Israel of repeatedly violating the 1974 disengagement agreement through these incursions into southern Syria. They allege that these actions, along with reported harassment of local residents, impede efforts to restore stability and attract investment for economic recovery.

Since 1967, Israel has occupied a significant portion of the Syrian Golan Heights. Following the overthrow of the Assad regime late last year, Israel declared the collapse of the 1974 disengagement agreement and expanded its presence beyond the established buffer zone.

Negotiations between Damascus and Tel Aviv are reportedly underway, with Syria demanding a return to pre-December 8, 2024, borders as a precondition for any security agreement. The ongoing Israeli actions are viewed by some as hindering the peace process and undermining efforts to rebuild the war-torn nation. DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing situation.
