Taxi Union Pledges Continued Service Amid Traffic Law Concerns

Algiers, January 3, 2026 – The National Union of Taxi Drivers has reaffirmed its commitment to providing uninterrupted service to the public, despite ongoing concerns regarding proposed changes to the traffic law.

Sid Ali Ait Hussein, Secretary-General of the union, detailed a recent meeting held with officials at the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation. He emphasized the importance of drivers maintaining service and avoiding disruptions fueled by misinformation.

“The Ministry is committed to collaborating with the union to develop concrete proposals and revisions to the draft traffic law,” Ait Hussein stated. These revisions aim to address the anxieties of taxi drivers, particularly professional drivers, who have voiced strong objections to the penalties outlined in the proposed law, including potential imprisonment and exorbitant fines.

Ait Hussein assured that the amendments to the traffic law would be significant, given that the document currently under consideration by the Council of the Nation remains open for discussion and potential revision.

Regarding the recent minor increase in fuel prices, the Secretary-General stressed the need for a balanced adjustment to transport fares. This adjustment should be carefully calculated to avoid burdening both citizens and drivers, while also supporting the transportation sector.

He further urged all taxi drivers to exercise restraint and refrain from suspending transport services, especially with the anticipated return of students to schools. A working group has been established and will commence its work next Tuesday at the Ministry headquarters to formulate necessary proposals, which are expected to be finalized within the coming week.

It is worth noting that the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation held a consultative meeting yesterday with five transport unions. This meeting was part of an effort to address the professional concerns raised by social partners.

A statement released following the meeting highlighted several points of agreement, particularly concerning the draft traffic law. It clarified that the law remains under review within the established legislative process and is subject to further refinement based on feedback and suggestions.
