Morocco Takes Precautionary Measures Amidst Severe Weather

Moroccan authorities are implementing preventative measures in the southern and western regions of the country in response to harsh weather conditions. These actions aim to safeguard citizens and infrastructure from potential risks associated with heavy rainfall and flooding.

In the southern Taroudant province, authorities preemptively evacuated 265 individuals residing near riverbeds following a significant rise in the water level of the Sidi Abdallah dam. The evacuations were carried out as a precaution due to substantial rainfall in the region. Evacuees were relocated to secure locations and provided with temporary shelter, thanks to the coordinated efforts of local authorities, the Royal Gendarmerie, and auxiliary forces.

This proactive intervention was triggered by the Sidi Abdallah dam reaching a high capacity. Consequently, substantial volumes of water were released to alleviate pressure on the dam and avert potential hazards to the safety of residents and nearby infrastructure, given the continued heavy rainfall. Alert levels have been heightened across various areas of the province, particularly in low-lying zones near river courses. An alert and awareness system has been activated to caution residents against approaching flowing water bodies.

Furthermore, the Ministry of National Education has announced the suspension of classes in the western province of Chtouka Ait Baha for all public and private educational institutions. This decision, effective Monday, is based on weather data included in warning bulletins and continuous assessments of the situation within the province.

The suspension of classes is a precautionary measure designed to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and administrative staff. The Directorate of Meteorology reported that rainfall exceeding 100 mm in recent days has resulted in road closures and school suspensions in certain cities. The Ministry of Interior has also urged citizens to exercise caution amidst the adverse weather conditions throughout the country.

These measures demonstrate Morocco’s commitment to prioritizing public safety and mitigating the impact of severe weather events.
