The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced on Monday the successful interception of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) belonging to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). According to a military source, the drones were targeting critical infrastructure and military installations in Merowe.
The SAF stated that the UAVs aimed to strike the Merowe Dam, the headquarters of the 19th Division, and the Merowe Air Base. The 19th Division confirmed the interception on its Facebook page, adding that no casualties or material damage were reported.
Meanwhile, in the Darfur region, escalating violence has resulted in a significant loss of life. Medical sources confirmed that approximately 100 people have been killed in separate attacks across Darfur within the past week.
These developments come amidst ongoing accusations between the SAF and RSF regarding responsibility for civilian casualties. Both sides accuse the other of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure in multiple states.
Reports indicate that the towns of Kenana and Asalaya in White Nile State were targeted by a swarm of kamikaze drones. Separately, the Sudanese National Human Rights Observatory reported that SAF drones allegedly targeted the town of Gereir in North Darfur, resulting in civilian injuries.
The Sudanese Doctors Network previously reported continued heavy shelling of the city of Deling in South Kordofan by the RSF and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), causing daily casualties among civilians. The network noted the difficulty in accurately counting the victims due to communication network disruptions within the city.
The conflict in Sudan has been ongoing for over two years, causing widespread displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis. The fighting continues despite international calls for a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The situation remains volatile, with a dire need for humanitarian assistance and a cessation of hostilities.
