Hajam’s AFCON Journey Cut Short by Injury

Algiers, January 5, 2026 – Joane Hadjam’s participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 has been officially cut short, national team coach Vladimir Petković announced today.

Speaking at a press conference held earlier today, Petković confirmed that after extensive efforts to rehabilitate Hadjam and ensure his availability for the tournament, a final decision has been made to allow the player to return to his club for further medical treatment and recovery.

“After attempting to get Hadjam back to full fitness, it was ultimately decided to permit him to depart and continue his necessary treatment with his club,” Petković stated.

The defender sustained a significant ankle injury during Algeria’s second group stage match against Burkina Faso in the previous AFCON edition. The injury has proven more persistent than initially hoped, hindering his ability to prepare adequately for the 2025 tournament.

The absence of Hadjam will undoubtedly be felt by the national team. His contributions on the field, particularly his defensive prowess, have been valuable assets in past competitions. The coaching staff will now need to reassess their tactical options and identify a suitable replacement to fill the void left by his departure. DZWatch will continue to provide updates on the national team’s preparations for AFCON 2025 and the search for a replacement for Hadjam.

This decision marks a disappointing end to Hadjam’s AFCON aspirations for this cycle. The focus now shifts to his recovery and potential return to the national team in the future. We wish him a speedy recovery.
