Algerian Army Thwarts Massive Drug Smuggling Operation

Algiers, January 5, 2026 – The Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) has released its operational report for 2025, highlighting significant achievements in combating terrorism and organized crime. The report underscores the high level of readiness and professionalism demonstrated by the armed forces.

According to a statement from the Ministry of National Defense, military operations resulted in the neutralization of 67 terrorists and the apprehension of 369 individuals providing support. Furthermore, 12 hideouts used by terrorist groups were uncovered and destroyed. Security forces also recovered 104 firearms and 13 bombs of various types, along with substantial quantities of ammunition.

In the fight against organized crime, authorities arrested 2,354 drug traffickers and thwarted attempts to smuggle 35 tons of processed cannabis (kif) across the border. A significant amount of cocaine, totaling 934 kilograms, was seized, along with a staggering 40 million psychotropic tablets.

The coordinated operations led to the arrest of 18,744 individuals and the confiscation of 498 firearms and 1,747 vehicles. Authorities also seized 7,633 pressure hammers, 12,574 generators, and 280 metal detectors. Additionally, over 2.6 million liters of fuel, 1,850 quintals of tobacco, and 1,298 tons of food intended for smuggling and speculation were confiscated in various operations across the country.

Joint detachments of the ANP also apprehended 24,071 illegal immigrants of various nationalities throughout Algeria. These operations reflect the ongoing commitment of the Algerian military to safeguarding the nation and combating all forms of criminal activity.
