First Container Train Shipment Departs Algiers Port

Algiers, Algeria – A landmark event occurred today with the departure of the first container train shipment from the Port of Algiers to Rouiba. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing logistical efficiency and modernizing freight transport in Algeria.

The pilot operation, which took place yesterday, involved the transportation of 48 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers by rail. This move aligns with the government’s strategy to adopt contemporary and multimodal transportation methods, aiming to alleviate pressure on road infrastructure and expedite container processing within ports.

The Ministry of Transport emphasized that this innovative approach is integral to boosting the competitiveness of Algerian ports by leveraging both technological advancements and human capital to ensure the swift and secure movement of goods. This is according to a statement released earlier today.

This development is in direct response to directives aimed at fostering a multimodal transportation system and connecting ports with major industrial zones. The ultimate goal is to positively impact the national economy and streamline trade flows.

By utilizing rail transport for container shipments, Algeria aims to reduce congestion on highways, lower transportation costs, and minimize environmental impact. This initiative is expected to contribute to a more sustainable and efficient logistics network, benefiting businesses and consumers alike.

The successful launch of this container train shipment underscores Algeria’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and improving its position as a key player in regional trade. Further expansion of rail freight services is anticipated in the coming months, with plans to connect more ports and industrial hubs across the country.
