An Algerian national has embarked on an extraordinary journey, cycling and hitchhiking across continents to support the Algerian football team, ‘Les Verts’ (The Greens), at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2025. The remarkable feat has captured the attention of football fans and adventure enthusiasts alike.
Mohamed, a 31-year-old nurse originally from Algeria but residing in Chambery, France, initiated his ambitious trek from India. What began as a tourist trip with his wife took an unexpected turn after an encounter with a local ‘tuk-tuk’ driver sparked the audacious idea to support his national team in person at the continental tournament.
Navigating complex political landscapes, particularly the tensions between India and Pakistan, Mohamed undertook the journey solo. He departed from New Delhi on August 22nd, aiming to reach Rabat, Morocco, before December 21st, relying primarily on hitchhiking to traverse vast distances.
His route took him through several countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. In Afghanistan, he even volunteered to assist victims of a devastating earthquake, utilizing a military helicopter to reach affected areas. Visa restrictions prevented him from entering Iran, forcing him to fly to Kuwait before continuing overland through Iraq, Syria, and eventually Turkey.
Reaching France, Mohamed purchased a bicycle to complete the final leg of his expedition. Despite limited experience in long-distance cycling, he covered between 150 and 200 kilometers daily, fueled by sports podcasts and the support of friends. With a modest daily budget, he arrived in Rabat on December 20th, just in time for the tournament’s opening.
Mohamed attended Algeria’s group stage matches, describing the atmosphere as electrifying, particularly after ‘Les Verts’ secured three consecutive victories. Following his incredible adventure, Mohamed hinted at future expeditions, suggesting his passion for travel and unwavering support for the Algerian team remain strong.
